Overall feeling that colours our perception of the world and influences how we approach daily life
What is a mood disorder?
A disabling disturbance in emotional state
What is depression and its symptoms
Mental condition characterized by feelings of despondency and dejection. Symptoms include feelings of worthlessness and guilt
What is mania and its symptoms?
Mental illness marked by periods of great excitement. Symptoms include overly excited and extremely active
What is bipolar and its symptoms?
Mental illness that brings severe high and low moods. Symptoms fluctuate between depression and mania
What is a contributing biological factor?
Genetics - depression is more common among related people then non related people
What is a contributing psychological factor?
Dysfunctional thinking - those with mood disorders think in negative ways and these thoughts will lower a persons mood
What is a contributing sociocultural factor?
Social stress - difficulties in relationships can lead to a sense of helplessness in ones ability to resolve issues
What is a biological treatment?
Antidepressant drugs - these drugs can brighten mood, improve sleep and increase energy
What is a psychological treatment?
Cognitive behaviour therapy - focuses on how an individual’s thinking effects their behaviour
What is a sociocultural treatment?
Support groups - provides advice and education about mood disorders
