Social development
Changes in an individual’s relationships with other people, such as the ability to form and maintain close relationships with others
Maturation
Orderly and sequential development changes which occur in the nervous system and other bodily structures
Longitudinal studies
Tracks the same group of people over an extended period of time, observing changes that occur in behaviour and/or mental processes.
Atypical behaviour
Individual acts in ways that are unusual for them
Atypical development
Development that differs from what is usual or appropriate
Cognitive behavioural therapy
Focuses on how an individual’s thinking affects their behaviour
Sensitive period
Period of time when an individual’s development is more responsive to certain types of environmental experiences
Critical period
A specific period during which an organisms development is most vulnerable to the absence of certain environmental stimuli or experiences
Delusions
Fixed false belief that is held with certainty, even when there is no strong factual evidence that does not support it
Adaptive behaviour
Actions that enable a person to effectively carry out their usual everyday tasks
Maladaptive behaviour
Behaviour that interferes with the persons ability to carry out their usual activities in an effective way
Biopsychosocial model
Way of explaining how biological, psychological and social factors combine to influence an individual’s behaviour and mental processes
