EXAM- Neuroimaging Techniques Flashcards
Define neuroimaging
Technique that captures a picture of the brain
What is CT?
Uses X-ray equipment to scan brain at different angles and produce scans showing STRUCTURE ONLY
What is an advantage and disadvantage of CT?
- advantage: determines when surgery is needed
- disadvantage: high volumes of radiation
What is MRI?
Uses magnetic fields to vibrate atoms in brains neurons to generate computer image showing STRUCTURE ONLY
What is an advantage and disadvantage of MRI?
- advantage: no involvement of radiation
- disadvantage: scanners are quite expensive
What is PET?
Produces colour images of BOTH BRAIN STRUCTURE AND ACTIVITY
What is an advantage and disadvantage of PET?
- advantage: distinguish between cancerous and non cancerous tumours
- disadvantage: must be short procedure due to radiation exposure
What is fMRI?
Detects and records brain activity by measuring oxygen consumption across the brain and produces colour image of BOTH STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
What is an advantage and disadvantage of fMRI?
- advantage: evaluates both structure and activity
- disadvantage: if metal device involved malfunctions, it causes problem during exam
