What is stage one?
Sensorimotor stage (0-2) infants explore and learn about the world primarily through their senses and motor activities
Object permanence
Understanding that an object still exists even if it cannot be seen, heard or touched ( sensorimotor )
Goal directed behaviour
Purposeful behaviour ( sensorimotor )
What is stage two?
Pre operational (2-7) infants become increasingly able to mentally represent objects and experiences.
Symbolic thinking
Cognitive ability to use symbols such as words and pictures to represent objects that are not physically present. ( pre operational )
Egocentrism
The tendency to perceive the world solely from ones own point of view ( pre operational )
Transformation
Understanding that something can change from one state to another ( pre operational )
Centration
The cognitive ability to focus on only one quality or feature of an object or event at a time. ( pre operational )
Reversibility
Cognitive ability to mentally follow a sequence of events or line of reasoning back to its starting point ( pre operational )
What is stage three?
Concrete operational ( 7-12 ) is when the child is now capable of true logical thoughts and can perform ‘ mental operations ‘
Conservation
Understanding that certain properties of an object can remain the same even when it’s appearance changes ( concrete operational )
Classification
Cognitive ability to organise objects or events into categories based on common features that set them apart from other categories ( concrete operational )
What is stage four?
Formal operational stage ( 12+ ) involves more compel thought processes and their thinking becomes increasingly sophisticated through brain maturation and life experiences
Abstract thinking
A way of thinking that does not rely on being able to see, visualise or experience something in order to understand it ( formal operational )
Idealistic thinking
Comparing oneself and others to a perfect standard and striving towards being like that ideal ( formal operational )
