EXAM- Participant Selection And Allocation For Experiments Flashcards
Sampling
Process of selecting participants from a population of research interest
Representative sample
A sample that is approximately the same as the population from which it was drawn
Random sampling
Sampling procedure which ensures every member of the population of research interest have equal chance of being selected
Stratified sampling
Sampling procedure which involves dividing the population to be sampled in different subgroups and selecting separate sample from each sub group
Convenience sampling
Sampling procedure involving selection of participants who are readily available
Random allocation
Procedure used to assign participants to experimental and control group so that each one has genuinely equal chance of being placed in any of the groups
Counterbalancing
Systematically changing the order of treatments or tasks for participants in a balanced way to counter unwanted effects on performance
Single-blind
Participants do not know whether they are in an experimental or a control group
Double-blind
Neither the participant nor the researcher interacting with the participants know which participants are in the experimental or control group
Placebo-effect
Any change in participants behaviour due to their belief that they are receiving some kind of experimental treatment and respond in accordance to that belief
Placebo
Fake treatment that is like the independent variable treatment but which has no known effect
Standardised instructions and procedures
Instructions and procedures are the same for all the participants
