Unit 10 (Consciousness) Flashcards
REM Sleep
Rapid eye movement sleep; a recurring sleep stage during which vivid dreams commonly occur. Also known as paradoxical sleep, because the muscles are relaxed but other body systems are active
NREM Sleep
Non-Rapid eye movement sleep; encompasses all sleep stages except for REM sleep
Insomnia
Recurring problems in falling or staying asleep
Night Terrors
A sleep disorder characterized by high arousal and an appearance of being terrified; unlike nightmares, night terrors occur during stage 4 sleep, within two or three hours of falling asleep and are seldom remembered
Psychoactive Drug
A chemical substance that alters perceptions and moods
Circadian Rhythm
The biological clock; regular bodily rhythms (for example, of temperature and wakefulness) that occurs on a 24 hour cycle.
Hypnosis
a temporary state of heightened relaxation and suggestibility during which some (not all) people are able to become so focused that they experience imaginary happenings as if they were real
Mediation
a spiritual practice and a form of alternative medicine that aims to provide physical relaxation and mental clarity
Activation Synthesis
the hypothesis suggests that dreams are created by changes in neuron activity that activates the brainstem during REM sleep
