What is a structured interview?
The interviewer asks the same questions to each participant in the same order, closed questions are often used.
What are the strengths of structured interviews?
Easy to draw out trends/patterns from responses.
What are the weaknesses of structured interviews?
No additional questions so miss out on further clarification.
What is a semi-structured interview?
The interviewer has pre-prepared questions, expected to ask all, other questions are developed in response to answers given.
What are the strengths of semi-structured interviews?
Can use additional questions for further details.
What are the weaknesses of semi-structured interviews?
Lacks context and detail.
What is an unstructured interview?
The researcher has topics but doesn’t have to be in order, conversational, further questions are developed in response to answers.
What are the strengths of an unstructured interview?
High ecological validity due to being similar to that of a regular conversation.
What are the weaknesses of an unstructured interview?
It is difficult to summarise data, analyses trends, and make comparisons.
What is a questionnaire?
A written method of gaining data, typically completed by participants or recorded by researchers.
What are the strengths of a questionnaire?
Easy to keep the ethical guideline of confidentiality.
What are the weaknesses of a questionnaire?
A slow response rate.
