What is a laboratory experiment?
the IV is manipulated by the researcher, which is carried out in a laboratory or contrived setting away from participants’ normal setting.
What are the strengths of a lab experiment?
As conducted under controlled environments, so can be replicated and standardised.
What are the weaknesses of a lab experiment?
Lacks ecological validity.
What is a field experiment?
the IV is manipulated by the research but is carried out in participants’ normal settings.
What are the strengths of a field experiment?
High in ecological validity.
What are the weaknesses of a field experiment?
Not controlled, so lacks reliability.
What is a quasi experiment?
IV is naturally occurring.
What are the strengths of a quasi experiment?
Can study variables that are impossible to manipulate.
What are the weaknesses of a quasi experiment?
Lack reliability as there are no controls over variables, so difficult to repeat.
