Unit 1 - Levels + Types of Data Flashcards
What is nominal data?
The lowest level of data. It is a ‘headcount’ of no. of participants who do one thing opposed to another (like a tally).
What is ordinal data?
Data is either placed or can be placed into rank order, highest to lowest, not account taken of how much further highest is from second highest, etc. (like a memory test).
What is interval/ratio data?
Any data with a universal measurement, individual results, and shows that if highest is much further ahead than second… Interval can go into negative values. Ratio has a true zero point.
What is quantitative data?
‘Quantities’ of things - numbers, raw score, etc. It is a measurement telling how much of something there is.
What is qualitative data?
‘Qualities’ of things - descriptions, words, meanings, etc. Cannot be readily counted.
What is primary data?
Collecting data directly.
What is secondary data?
Analysing information that already exists.
What is a strength of quantitative data?
Quick and easy to obtain, reliablity increased. Analysis of data is easy. Can compare across conditions/individuals easily.
What is a weakness of quantitative data?
Limited results as data is numerical, fails to answer how or why.
What is a strength of qualitative data?
More in depth conclusions, responses are better understood. E.g. Asking ‘why’ (give reasons for response)
What is a weakness of qualitative data?
Not possible to present in graphs, tables, or charts - unless can be collated into a small number of categories, difficult to present in form that can be easily understood.
