Unit 1 Final Flashcards
What happens when we zoom closer and closer into the specimen using a microscope?
We see more detail
Atom
Building blocks of all matter, smallest unit of an element
Molecule
Formed when atoms bond together
Element
A specific type of atom
Matter
Anything that is mass and takes up space
How to identify atoms and molecules?
An atom only has one element and a molecule has more than one atom
What gases make up the atmosphere?
Nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and trace gases
What are 6 examples of air pollution?
Ozone o3, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and lead PB
What are causes of air pollution?
Gasoline from cars, powerplants, burning fossil fuels, and industry
What are the characteristics of a solid?
Molecules vibrate/they have a definite shape and a definite volume
What is a characteristic of a liquid?
Molecules move freely, but not too freely/ they have no definite shape, but a definite volume
What is the characteristic of a gas?
The molecules move in random motion/have no definite shape or volume
What is density?
How packed molecules are in matter
List the states of matter in order from least dense to most dense:
Gas, liquid, and solid
How does heat affects states of matter and density?
It affects it by heat making the molecules move faster. The faster, the molecules move, less dense becomes.
What are the phase changes of water?
Solid to liquid is melting
Liquid to solid is freezing
Liquid to gas is evaporation
Gas to liquid is condensation
Gas to solid is deposition
Solid to gas simulation
What is independent variable?
The variable that is manipulated in an experiment; the factor that the experimenter changes
What is the dependent variable?
The variable that is affected in an experiment; the variable that will change as a result of the independent variable
What are the controls/constants?
Factors that stay the same between the different groups of an experiment
What is heat?
A measurement of energy
What is Temperature?
Measure of the average heat or thermal energy of the molecules in a substance
What is an insulator?
Materials that transfer heat slowly
What is a conductor?
Material that transfers heat quickly
