Science Ch 8 Consepts Flashcards
What is air made up Of and what gas is the most in?
Air is made up of about 80% of nitrogen and about 20% of oxygen. there is much more nitrogen and oxygen
How many layers are in the atmosphere?
5
What happens when you go through the five layers of the atmosphere?
Temperature and air pressure change
What happens to the air pressure as you go up through the atmosphere?
Air pressure decreases or goes down as you go up in the atmosphere
What are the five layers of the atmosphere?
Troposphere (where most weather happens), stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere
What gets warmer more quickly land or Water?
Land
What cools quicker Land or water?
Land cools quicker than water does
What happens when cool air and warm air are next to each other?
When they are next to each other, cool air will sink in force the warm air to rise
Where are jet streams?
They are high above the ground (between convention currents)
What do jet streams change?
They change temperature, wind, and precipitation results.
How do air masses form?
Air that stays over an area for some time takes properties of the area and becomes an air mass
What causes air masses to move?
Wind
What do cold fronts bring?
They bring cold air
What does a cold front cause?
It forces warm air to move up quickly which usually causes heavy precipitation
What do warm fronts bring?
Warm air
What does warm air do?
Warm air gradually rises above cooler air
What are clouds formed by warm fronts do?
They move slower and cause longer periods of precipitation
What does a stationary Front do?
A stationary front doesn’t move very much or moves back and forth over the same area.
What is Lightning?
-Lightning Is a large electrical spark between two areas of opposite charges.
How is thunder made?
Lightning causes the air to warm so quickly that the air expand rapidly making a vibration called thunder.
What Makes the tornado begin to stand upright?
Upward winds lifts one end of the spinning column while downward winds pushes down on the other end.
How fast can wind move in a tornado?
They can move at hundreds of kilometers per hour
How long do tornadoes usually last?
They usually only last a few minutes, but can leave a path many kilometers long and hundreds of meters wide
Where is the best place in your house to take shelter?
The basement
Where do hurricanes get their energy?
They get their energy from warm ocean water
What is more destructive hurricanes or tornadoes?
Hurricanes are more destructive than tornadoes even though the winds are not as fast
How long does a Hurricane last and what does it do?
It lasts for many days, hitting several locations as it moves
Are hurricanes larger or smaller than tornadoes?
Hurricane or much wider than tornadoes
What do hurricanes create?
They create huge waves that cause severe damage and flooding.
What is a funnel Cloud and What is it called when it touches the ground?
Spinning column of air, and when it touches the ground it is called a tornado
Why was hurricane Sandy as severe as it was?
1 there was a high tide
2 there was a full moon
3 the hurricane was hitting all at the same time
What are hurricanes named after?
They have men and women names
What happens if a hurricane causes extensive damage?
The name is never used again, or “retired”
for example hurricane Katrina
