The Water Cycle FINAL Flashcards
What are some places water is found? (Hint: there are 5 listed)
- Plants
- Ocean, Lakes, and rivers (bodies of water)
- In the air
- Human body
- Clouds
What are some patterns you find in the locations you find water?
- As the air gets colder, the water freezes
- Phase changes (solid, liquid, gas)
- Manmade or natural
The water dinosaurs drank is the some water we drink today. How can this be?
The water from long ago was repeatedly going through the water cycle
What do you see in the photo? (Hint: there are 8 listed below)
- Water
- Clouds
- Arrows
- Sun
- Land
- Mountains
- Volcanoes
- Ice and snow
What do you think is happening in the photo?
The water is going through phases, a.k.a. the water cycle
What do you think the arrows mean in the photo?
The direction to where the water is going
What is a water reservoir?
Stored water
What is a water transfer?
Moving water
Where is water stored? (Hint: there are 6 listed below)
- Ocean
- Clouds
- Springs
- Ice and snow
- Underground
- In the air
What makes water move
- heat
- Gravity
Why does steam come off of plants?
This happens because when the plants get watered, it goes to the leaves and because of heat or the sun, it eventually goes up in the air and evaporate causing steam
Is the steam coming off the plant representing a water transfer or water reservoir?
A water transfer (transeration)
What is Evapotranspiration?
The sum of all processes by which water moves from the land surface to the atmosphere from the soil of the plant
What does evapotranspiration include?
Transpiration
What is transpiration?
The release of water vapor/gas from plant leaves
What affects transpiration? (Hint: there are 7 listed)
- The type of plant
- Soil type in saturation
- Sunlight, ability and intensity
- precipitation
- Humidity
- The temperature
- Wind, and air movement
How many steps does transpiration take?
3 steps
How do living organisms play a role in the water cycle?
Living organisms play a role in the water cycle by the plants having transpiration. Transpiration is the release of water vapor, gas, from plant leaves.
What happens to water molecules when thermal energy or heat is removed?
The molecules start to come closer together and slow down
The water gets more dense
And it goes to a solid from a gas
What happens to water molecules when thermal energy is added?
The molecules start to move, farther apart and move faster
It gets less dense
It starts to form into a gas
What causes water to move up towards the sky?
The sun’s heat
What causes water to fall towards the earth?
Gravity
what is the difference between the sun and gravity?
Heat from the sun is a type of energy and gravity is a type of force
What is happening on the molecular level between the heat and gravity?
Gravity keeps water down, while the sun keeps the water up
How does the molecular level help us to make sense on a larger scale?
It helps us to understand the phase changes of the water
