uneven population distribution North America case study Flashcards
location of canadian northlands
- In the arctic circle, it has three territories: Yukon, Northwest and Nunavut.
how many people live in the canadian northlands
100,000
AVERAGE POPULATION DENSITY OF THE CANADIAN NORTHLANDS
less than one person per km2.
WHY IS AGRICULTURE SO DIFFICULT IN THE CANADIAN NORTHLANDS (5)
There is a very harsh climate, and sunshine is very irregular.
There is also bad/infertile soil, a very unpredictable climate and high
supply costs for farming.
Summers are short, and becoming shorter and winters are cold with
a mean temperature of -20degrees celsius in january.
Cold climate gives a short growing season less than 3 months of the
year is the temperature warm enough for the plants to grow
Limited carrying capacity
WHY DOES THE PERMAFROST PRESENT FURTHER DIFFICULTY FOR HUMAN HABITATION
The permafrost makes it impossible to grow food, to make holes in order to fish and cannot have railways or types of long term transportations on it.
HOW REMOTENESS AND TRANSPORT HAVE LIMITED THE DEVELOPMENT AND POPULATION OF THE CANADIAN NORTHLANDS
The big distances separating the small communities in the northlands and the severe environmental conditions in the region have created: economic, engineering and maintenance difficulties for transportation development. This is because the road system is very sparse because of the amount of ice, the railway system cannot extend into the arctic circle and water transport is only accessible in some months of the year as it is dictated by the location and season, and so as many are frozen most year round they best and only transport option is air
most towns in the canadian northlands are
mining towns
