NATURAL
Heavy tropical monsoon rain/season
Climate change
The monsoon rains were more intense, heavy amounts than normal (about 20% more than normal)
Melting glaciers that happened at the same time
Lower channel capacity because of more sedimentation (deposition)
HUMAN causes of the flood
Bad prevention methods from government/ bad flood management
Deforestation because of population growth and more need for wood which encourages surface runoff and takes sediment with it reducing channel capacity
Poor infrastructure (dams and reservoirs getting destroyed/collapsed)
No evacuation for people

Farmers losing their crops and cows/animals
40 billion for reparations
social consequences of the flood
2000 Deaths
Water borne Disease rates were very high
Food and water shortages

Water contamination
Habitats being damaged
political consequences of the flood
People were mad at government because government dealt with it badly
Responses - how was the situation managed by the authorities/agencies?
The government didn’t have enough teams to send out/ enough people to send aid considering the size of the flood
Even though it was predicted the government had not sent out warnings or prepare for a flood
why were people mad at how the government reacted
Government not prepared for crisis, and it should have been because they knew that rainfall was very heavy and was predicted so should have prepared
Did not raise awareness
Government lagged necessary resources ( aircrafts/ saving equipment/knowledgeable/evacuation people/teams)
angered the people as the government took a very long time to reach certain places and didn’t send help
They didn’t have any water or food left and the government wasn’t doing much, they said the government didn’t care about their wellbeing.
Also did not find alternative places for people to move to (not even camps)
how many people were delpoyed to help from the army
30000
was it a large flood
yes, The flood spread over such a large area that helicopters and aid wasn’t able to reach everywhere
