Ulcer Drugs Flashcards
Antacids
NaBicarbonate, Mg is a laxative and Al is a constipator, given together to avoid side effects. Decreased acidity affects pepsin and may impair protein digestion.
H2 blockers
Block histamine receptors
M3 Blockers
Block muscarine receptors.
PPIs
Proton pump inhibitors inhibit proton pumps in parietal cells (first enter cell and close pump from the inside). Decreased intrinsic factor leads to a decreased vitB12 absorption. Leads to G cell hypertrophy, D cell atrophy and ECL cell hypertrophy, sudden stopping of treatment may result in acid over-secretion.
Prostaglandin analogue
Increases mucosal secretions, decreases acid secretions. Is teratogenic.
Sucralfate
Binds the ulcer to protect it from the acidic environment. Sequesters pepsin and other medications.
PPIs + anti-H. Pylori antibodies
PPIs and antibodies help against H. Pylori if it is suspected to be an infection.
Name 7 drugs to treat ulcers
Antacids, H2 blockers, M3 blockers, PPIs, prostaglandin analogues, sucralfate, PPIs + anti H pylori antibodies.
