Hyperlipidemia Drugs Flashcards
Statins
Inhibit HMGCoA reductase and stop cholesterol synthesis, up regulate LDL receptor in the liver. Side effect is muscle atrophy and pain.
Resins
Bind bile acids in the gut and thus stop their reabsorption, meaning that more needs to be made from cholesterol. Side effects are migraine, diarrhea, nausea.
Fibrates
Activate PPARalpha and increase the transcription of enzymes needed for lipid metabolism. Side effects are muscle pain and atrophy, nausea and vomiting.
Cholesterol absorption inhibitors
Inhibit cholesterol absorption in the small intestine. SE: diarrhea and flatulence.
PCSK9 inhibitors
PCSK9 is an LDL inhibitor, when it is inhibited there is an increased uptake of LDLs.
Name 5 drugs for hyperlipidemia
Statins, resins, fibrates, cholesterol absorption inhibitors and PCSK 9 inhibitors.
