Heart Failure Drugs Flashcards
Beta blockers
Inhibit compensatory mechanisms which worsen heart failure.
ACE inhibitors / ARBs
Decrease preload and after-load and increase cardiac output.
ARNIs
ARBs and also inhibit reprolysin which breaks down useful natriuretic peptides. They decrease hypertrophy and blood pressure and increase cardiac output.
Diuretics
Acutely do not affect cardiac output but can in the long run decrease afterload and increase cardiac output.
Dogotalis
Competes with K for the sodium potassium atpase and inhibits na exchange for ca, thus increases contractility. Overdose leads to arrhythmia and blurred vision.
Ivabradin
Blocks ion channel in the sinus node and decreases heart rate slightly raising cardiac output by raising filling time.
SGLT2 inhibitors
Block kidney glucose transporter, glucose is excreted and pulls water. Has cardiovascular protection but may lead to more UTIs.
Name 7 drugs to treat heart failure
Beta blockers. Calcium channel blockers. Ace inhibitors or arbs. Arnis. Diuretics. Digitalis. Ivabradin and SGLT2 inhibitors.
