examples of negative symptoms
avolition - can’t continue activities
algolia - absence of speech
anhedonia - lack of pleasure
asociality - lack of interest in social interaction
affective flattening - no reaction to emotional situations
disorganized speech
- loose associations and derailment
- tangentiality
inappropriate affect
laughing or crying at inappropriate times
catatonic immobility
keeping body in the position someone else puts it in
hallucinations
have sensory experience even though its not there
(most often auditory or visual)
delusions
misrepresentations of reality
common types of delusions
grandeur - belief they are powerful
persecution - others are out to get them
cotards syndrome - part of the body has changed in an impossible way
capgras syndrome - person believes others have been replaced by a double
diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia
2+ symptoms
1 of delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech
impairment in functioning
signs of disturbance for 6+ months
schizophrenia develops most commonly in
late adolescence
prodomal stage
unusual behaviour occurring before real symptoms (2-10 yrs to develop from this to full blown)
schizophreniform (criteria)

more then 1 month less then 6
