Types of pathogens Flashcards
What does bacteria do to damage the organism?
Prokaryotes that reproduce rapidly, damages cell or releases toxins, often cause blackening or death of vascular bundles in plants
What does virus do to damage the organism?
Invade cells, take over organelles and make more copies of. themselves, cells then burst releasing more virus
What does protists do to damage the organism?
Eukaryotes usually enters host cells and feeds on them
What does fungi do to damage the organism?
Eukaryotes coEukaryotes that consist of mycelium (network and hyphae), some of which grow(under skin) and produce reproductive spores(above skin), and can irritate tissue and/or cause decay especially in plants as enzymes digest it
What type of pathogen is tuberculosis and what harm does it do?
Bacteria that affects many parts of the body, killing the cells and tissues, the lungs are the most affected
What type of pathogen is bacterial meningitis and what harm does it do?
Bacteria that infects the monenges - the membranes that surrounded the brain and spinal chord, the membrane becomes swollen and may cause damage to the brain and nerves
What type of pathogen is ring rot and what harm does it do?
Bacteria that makes a ring or decay in the vascular tissue of a potato/tomato, as well as leaf wilting
What type of pathogen is HIV/AIDS and what harm does it do?
Virus that attacks cells in the immune system and compromises the immune system
What type of pathogen is influenza and what harm does it do?
Virus that attacks respiratory and cause muscle pains and headaches
What type of pathogen is tobacco mosaic virus and what harm does it do?
Virus that causes mottling and discolouration of leaves
What type of pathogen is black sigotoka and what harm does it do?
Fungus that causes lead spots on banana leaves reducing yield
What type of pathogen is ring worm and what harm does it do?
Fungus that grows on the skin with spores erupting through skin to cause a rash
What type of pathogen is athletes foot and what harm does it do?
Fungus that grows under the skin of the feet particularly in between the toes
What type of pathogen is the blight and what harm does it do?
Protoctists that affects both leaves and potato tissue
What type of pathogen is the malaria and what harm does it do?
Protoctists that causes headaches and fever and may progress to a coma and death
It attacks red blood cells and liver cells
