Transmission of pathogens Flashcards
What is direct transmission?
No other organism carries pathogen
What is indirect transmission?
Pathogen transmitted by another organism
How are diseases spread by direct physical contact?
This is when an infected person or touching contaminated surfaces with the disease
How are diseases spread by faecal - oral transmission?
Oral transmission, usually by eating contaminated food or water
How are diseases spread by droplet transmission?
Small water droplets in the air transmit disease
How are diseases spread by vectors?
Organism that carries a pathogen from 1 host to another
How are diseases spread by spores?
Can be carried in the air or surfaces or soil
What affects the transmission of direct physical contact?
Hygiene: washing hands regularly, keeping surfaces clean, cleaning and disinfecting cuts and abrasions. Sterilising surgical equipment, not using condoms
What affects the transmission of faecal - oral transmission?
Treating human sewage that will be used in farming, treating water that will be drunk. Washing all fresh food and preparing food as well
What affects the transmission of droplet transmission?
Catch it - bin it - kill it, cover mouth when sneezing or coughing, Use a tissue so it can be disposed of correctly
What affects the transmission of vectors?
Using pesticides/mosquito mets to stop transmission
What affects the transmission of spores ?
Use a mask/washing skin after contact with soil
What does over-crowding affect the transmission of disease?
Increase droplet infection and direct physical contact
What does poor ventilator affect the transmission of disease?
Increase droplet infection
How does poor health affect the transmission of disease?
Weakened immune systems of HIV/ AIDS
