Types Of Joints Flashcards
What is a joint?
A joint is where two or more bones meet. Joints are important for movement and rotation. All joints allow movement, although the extent and freedom of the movement varies from joint to joint
The 4 types of joints
Ball and socket
Hinge
Pivot
Condyloid
What movements occur at the pivot joint and where in the body?
Pivot joints allow bones to rotate. In a pivot joint, one bone shaped like a cylinder rotates inside another bone or ligament that makes a ring around it. The two pivot joints in the body are the wrist and the elbow
How can a pivot joint aid a performance?
In situations that require rotation in sport e.g. heading a ball in football uses the pivot point in the neck
What is a hinge joint?
A hinge joint is a joint that allows only backward and forward motion, just like the hinge on a door.
How are hinge joints useful in sport?
Hinge joints are useful in sport whenever backwards and forwards movement is needed and used in a joint, e.g. using your elbow to get leverage under the ball in bowling as it creates a higher rev rate
What is a ball and socket joint?
In a ball and socket joint, the rounded head of a bone (the ball) fits in to a cup shaped hole (the socket). Both the hip and the shoulder joints are ball and socket joints
When are ball and socket joints useful in sport?
In any sporting situation that requires a rotation or circular motion in the joint, e.g. a cricket bowler using their shoulder
What is a condyloid joint?
A condyloid joint is similar to a ball and socket joint, but the ball rests against the end of a bone, rather than inside a socket. This allows a circular motion
When is a condyloid joint useful in sport?
In any sporting situation where the wrist is used for flexion, extension, adduction or abduction e.g. rotating the wrist when your hand is leaving the ball in bowling in order to create rev rate and hook potential
