What is flexion and when is it used in sport?
Flexion is a bending movement that decreases the angle between body parts. It is used when lifting the arm up to do a bicep curl. This occurs in the shoulder, hip and elbow.
What is extension and when is it used in sport?
A straightening movement that increases the angle between two body parts. It is used when a swimmer pushes their arms backwards before a dive. This occurs in the shoulder and the hip
What is adduction and when is it used in sport?
A movement that pulls towards the midline of the body. It is used as a golfer swings towards the ball. This occurs in the shoulder and the hip
What is abduction and when is it used in sport?
A movement that pulls away from the midline of the body. It is used when a gymnast moves their arms out sideways from the body from the shoulder whilst on the rings. This occurs in the shoulder and the hip
What is rotation and when is it used in sport?
Rotation is a movement around a singular axis or pivot point. It is used in a tennis players serve. This occurs in the shoulder and the hip
What is circumduction and when is it used in sport?
Moving in a circular or conical shape and it is used in a swimmers backstroke. This occurs in the shoulder and the hip
What is dorsi flexion and when is it used in sport?
Bending of flexing the toes up, closer to the shin. It is used as a sprinter positions their feet in the starting blocks. This occurs in the ankle
What is plantar flexion and when is it useful in sport?
Extending or pointing the toes down away from the shin. It is used as a floor gymnast points their toes. This occurs in the ankle
