Q

What is the location of the gluteals and what are their functions?

A

They are located in the middle of the body at the back, forming the bottom. They adduct and extend the leg at the hips, pull the leg backwards

Q

Where is the gastrocnemius located and what is its function?

A

It is located at the bottom of each leg at the back. Also known as the calf muscles. They point the toes (planta-flexion) at the ankle

Q

Where is the latissimus dorsi located and what is its function?

A

The latissimus dorsi is located at the back of the body, either side of the chest. Their function is to pull your arms down at the shoulders and behind your back.

Q

Where are the deltoids located and what is their function?

A

Q

Where are the external obliques located and what is their function?

A

Q

Where is the tibialis anterior located and what is its function?

A

The tibialis anterior runs down the shin. It pulls the toes up towards the shin (dorsi-flexion)

Q

Where are the hip flexors located and what is their function?

A

They sit deep in the front of the leg and connect the hip. Their function is to flex the hip, help the leg and knee up towards the body.

Q

What are voluntary muscles?

A

Voluntary muscles are muscles that are under your control, meaning you can decide when you tense them or not. Voluntary muscles can only pull and they do this by contracting

15
Q

Why are voluntary muscles useful to sport?

A

Without voluntary muscles, the body would not be able to be controlled as you could not choose when you move the muscle, meaning movement would be completely random

16
Q

Why are involuntary muscles important in sport?

A

Involuntary muscles like those in blood vessels are useful for supplying blood around the body, therefore oxygen is transferred to your muscles allowing you to perform

17
Q

What are cardiac muscles?

A

They are muscles that are only found in the heart and is therefore a very specialised type of involuntary muscle. Cardiac muscles are mad of interlaced fibres

18
Q

What are antagonistic pairs?

A

Antagonistic pairs are when two muscles work together to perform one motion e.g. chest and back when doing bench press.

19
Q

What is the name of the muscle that works in an antagonistic pairs?

A

The agonist

20
Q

What is the name of the muscle that relaxes in an antagonistic pair?

A

The antagonist

21
Q

What are three antagonistic pairs in the gcse spec?

A

Bicep and tricep
Quads and hamstring
Tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius

22
Q

What are slow twitch fibres?

A

Slow twitch is type 1 of the muscle fibres. They have a slow contraction rate and are very resistant to fatigue. This means they can repeat consistently. They produce large amounts of atp

23
Q

What are fast twitch fibres type A?

A

They manufacture and split atp at a fast rate by using bith aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. Because of this they produce fast and strong muscle contractions

24
Q

What are fast twitch fibres type 2?

A

Produce atp at a slow rate by anabolic metabolism and break it down very quickly. This results in extremely fast and powerful movements but result in very quick fatigue
