Long Term Effects Of Exercise Flashcards
What is muscular hypertrophy?
The growth and increase in the size of muscles.
What is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is when the bones become weak and tend to break much easier. Common in the elderly
Long term effects of exercise on the musculo-skeletal system
Increased strength of ligaments and tendons
Increased bone density- helps prevent osteoporosis
Rest for adaptation and recovery
Muscular hypertrophy- growth and increase in the size of a muscle
Long term effects of exercise on the cardio-respiratory system
Decreased heart rate Faster recovery rate Increased resting stroke volume Maximum cardiac output Capillaries Increased number of red blood cells
What is stroke volume?
The amount of blood that is pumped out by your heart
What is cardiac output?
The amount of blood pumped out by your heart per minute. Stroke volume times the amount if times your heart beats per minute
Increased lung capacity
Your lungs will become more efficient, and they will be better at delivering oxygen to your working muscles so that your body can cope better during exercise.
Increased number of alveoli
More alveoli will become available for gaseous, exchange after regular exercise, so more oxygen can be absorbed by the capillaries and more co2 taken from them
Increased strength of the diaphragm and intercostal mucles
Exercise increases the strength of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, allowing an athlete to take in more air
