Injury Flashcards
What are the 5 main ways to prevent injury?
Correct training Warm ups Cool downs Wearing appropriate equipment/facilities Playing to the rules
How can the principles of training prevent injury?
Using the principles of training correctly avoids injury as it maximises your physical state, therefore creating the ideal situation of fitness and reducing the risk of injury
8 main types of injury
Strains Sprains Torn cartilage Soft tissue injury Dislocation Concussion Abrasions Fractures
What is concussion?
Concussion is an injury usually caused by a blow to the head and can happen in many sports.
What are the symptoms of concussion?
Headaches, weakness, loss of co-ordination, loss of balance, confusion or slurred speech
What is a fracture?
A fracture is a broken or cracked bone that can occur from a blow
The 4 types of fractures
In closed fracture: The skin does not break or get damaged
Compound fracture: The broken bone protrudes through the skin
Simple fracture: Takes place in one line, with no displacement of the bone
Stress fracture: They can happen as a result of fatigue (overuse)
Greenstick fracture
Break only part way across the bone
Transverse fracture
Break straight across the bone
Impacted fracture
The pieces of bone lock in to eachother
Comminuted fracture
Broken in to more than two pieces
Oblique fracture
Broken at an angle
What is a dislocation?
A dislocation is when a bone at a joint is forced out of its normal position. Often occurs as a result of a hard blow which causes one of the bones to be displaced
Torn cartillage
Cartilage is a firm elastic substance which lines adjoining bones. It absorbs the impact on the bones while reducing the friction from sports/activity. Often occurs due to long term overuse
Soft tissue injury
Joints are where two or more bones meet. They are particularly prone to injury as movement past its range can cause tearing or pulling ligaments and tendons
