Types of Experiments Flashcards
Experimental method
Where you manipulate the variables to test cause and effect and to test hypothesis.
Strength of experimental method
Objective and more scientific.
Test cause and effect.
Weakness of experimental method
Higher chance of demand characteristics.
Laboratory experiment
Where the IV is directly manipulated in an artificial and highly controlled setting.
Strength of a lab experiment
Less chance of extraneous (situational) variables.
High in internal reliable.
Easier to test cause and effect.
Weakness of lab experiment
Lack ecological validity.
Lacks construct validity.
Higher chance of demand characteristics.
Field experiment
Where the IV is directly manipulated in a natural environment with some levels of controls.
Strength of a field experiment
High in ecological validity.
Less chance of demand characteristics.
High in external validity.
Weakness of a field experiment
High chance of extraneous (situational) variables.
Lacks internal reliability and harder to test cause and effect.
Quasi Experiment
Where the IV is naturally occurring and takes place in an artificial or natural environment.
Weakness of quasi experiment
Time consuming
Lacks internal reliability as you have to wait for IV to naturally occur.
Strength of a quasi experiment
Can obtain more natural behaviour.
Higher in ecological validity if in natural environment.
More ethical.
