Type 1/2 Errors Flashcards
What is a type 1 error ?
Situation in which our findings show something, when they actually don’t (false positive).
What do we incorrectly do with null hypothesis with type 1 errors?
-Incorrectly reject the null hypothesis, when we should have accepted it.
-Assume results were due to IV when they were in fact due to chance.
Why do type 1 errors occur?
-Set p value too leniently
-The higher p value increases, the higher the possibility the results were down to chance.
What are type 2 errors?
When findings don’t show something, when they should (False negative).
What do we incorrectly do with null hypothesis with type 2 errors?
-Incorrectly accept the null hypothesis, when we should have rejected it.
-Assumed the results were down to chance, when they were down to IV.
Why do type 2 errors occur ?
-When p value is set too high.
-Higher the value, higher the possibility the results were down to IV.
When is it necessary to set p value lower ?
Can be necessary when trialing new medicine treatments.
