Reliability Flashcards
What is reliability ?
Reliability is the consistency of a study. For self-report methods, reliability ensures that responses are consistent across times and occasions.
What is internal reliability ?
Whether the procedure of the study is standardised (controlled).
What is external reliability ?
Consistency of the findings outside the study (whether results can be replicated outside the study).
-Big samples
What is inter-rater reliability ?
Agreement between 2 or more researchers. Has to be 80% which can be obtained via a consensus.
What are extraneous variables ?
If there is not enough control, extraneous variables occur. These are variables that aren’t the IV but can affect the DV if not controlled for.
What can extraneous variables lead to ?
Extraneous variables that haven’t been controlled for turninto confounding variables that affect the results of the research.
What is the split-half method ?
Two halves of the questionnaire are similar so can assume it is reliable. Mainly used in self-reports. E.g. repeated questions but asked slightly different to check reliability of the answers given.
What is the test retest method ?
Test participants more than once. Reliable if person gets same or similar scores.
