Types of computer systems Flashcards
Quantum computers
What are they?
A quantum computer which makes use of the quantum states of subatomic particles to store information.
How are they used?
They are used to perform large numbers calculations simultaneously. Used to crack codes.
Benefits:
They are very fast
Limitations:
Firstly, it is hard to build a quantum computer in the first place but also difficult to build a stable quantum computer.
Mainframes
What are they?
Mainframes are large high-speed computers that support numerous workstations or peripherals.
How are they used?
Mainly used in organisations for bulk data processing, enterprise resource planning and transaction processing.
Benefits:
Multiple uses
Highly stable
Limitations:
Installation - more complicated to set up (requires special software and a special operating system)
Expensive
Desktop computers
What are they? Desktop computers are personal computers that fit on a desk. How are they used? Desktop computers are used for general purposes such are playing games, socialising, searching the internet. Benefits: No battery Cheap Easy to upgrade Limitations: Not portable Can be noisy Need space
