Why is an operating system needed?
An operating system is needed because it allows software and hardware access the central processing unit.
It also provides a platform to run applications and helps the CPU carry out multiple tasks by managing the memory and CPU processing time.
Main functions of an operating system
Communicates with internal and external hardware with drivers.
Allows the user to interact with the computer through GUI.
Mimics multitasking.
File management and disk management.
User account management/control.
Do you know why each piece of hardware needs a driver?
It’s because drivers act as translators between the operating system and hardware.

A single-user operating system is a system used for personal devices as it is suited for one user.

A single-user operating system is able to mimic multi-tasking. They usually have gigabytes of RAM available to run these tasks.
Features and uses of a multi-user operating system
A multi-user operating system has to be able to maintain each user logged onto the system including their workspace. It has to be able to maintain security to protect the users from hackers. The operating system keeps logs of how much processing time and resources they use.
