TWO BEEE Flashcards
What is an abnormal heart sound?
A murmur
What is the sound for incompetence?
“Swishing”
What is the sound for stenotic?
high pitch or “click”
What is the heart valve disease when a valve does not open properly?
Valvular Stenosis
What is it called when a valve does not close properly causing a back flow of blood? (3 names) :)
valvular regurgitation/incompetence/insufficiency
What is the end result of valve dysfunction?
Myocardial hypertrophy
What are the three causes of heart valve disease?
- Rheumatic fever 2.Congenital 3.Prosthetic Valve clotting/infection
What is usually the stem cause of Rheumatic fever?
post group a beta-hemeolytic infection (strep throat)
Which valve is most commonly affected in rheumatic heart disease?
Mitral
What is the triple whammy of rheumatic heart disease?
- fibrotic healing on valve/chordae tendinae 2.Calcification on valve 3. sealing of valves
What is decreased by mitral stenosis? (3 effects)
EDV therefore SV therefore CO!
What area(s) can hypertrophy with mitral stenosis?
both the LA and the LV! Can also cause dyerhythmias
What are the two main causes of Mital Stenosis?
1.Rheumatic Fever 2.Congenital heart defect
WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON heart valve problem? What is the analogy?
MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE(insufficiency)…inside-out umbrella
What can all of these lead to? Rheumatic fever •Infective endocarditis •Wear and tear on the valve
•Prior heart attack •Untreated high blood pressure
•Congenital heart defects?
Mitral Insufficency
