4B-Anatomy/Phys Resp Flashcards
What are the two main tasks of the respiratory system?
ventilation and gas exchange
What are the muscles of INSPIRATION?
Diaphragm & External intercostals
What are the muscles of EXPIRATION?
Internal Intercostals & Abdominal muscles
Which muscle group does not have to work for a person to live?
Expiration…we naturally exhale
What is the shape of the diaphragm when it is relaxed?
Dome
What nerves keep the diaphragm alive?
Phrenic, C3,4,5
Which muscles 1. elevate the ribs and 2. move the sternum anteriorly upon contraction? What are the analogies?
External Intercostals…1. Elevate ribs=bucket handle 2.sternum anterior=pump handleHANDS in pocket fiber orientation
Which exhalation function does emphysema attack?
Elastic recoil!
What happens to the bucket handle when the internal intercostals contract?
it goes down, ribs condense and push out air
Where is the division of upper and lower respiratory structures?
larynx——-trach
What is the difference between the conduction zone and the respiratory zone?
Condution-no gas exchange. Respiratory=gas exchange
Where does the airway technically begin? Generation 0?
The trachea
What Autonomic NS bronchoDILATES? What receptors? What NT?
SYMPATHETIC (breathe deeply when shit scared!). Beta2 Receptors for Epi/NorEpi
What Autonomic NS bronchoCONTRICTS? What receptors? What NT?
ParaSym..Muscarinic…Ach
What are alveoli surrounded by?
Pulmonary capillaries
