tropical storms Flashcards
what 4 things needed for a tropical storm to form?
- sea temp above 26 degrees
- thunder storm cluster
- earths rotation (coriolis affect)
- light wind shear up (surface winds)
where do tropical storms gain ebergy?
warm water = also increases wind speed
when is troopical storms energy lost?
going over land or cold water
where can tropical storms not form and why?
- on the equator
- coriolus affect = no surface winds on the equator
distrubution of tropical storms:
hurricanes?
typhoon?
cyclone?
- atalantic ocean [USA]
- pacific ocean [china]
- indian ocean
name some impacts of tropical storms?
[always remember level of development]
- wind
- rain
- storm surges [coasts]
- flooding
- damage to infastucture
give characteristics of the centre of the eye?
- low presure
= no wind, rain - centre of the storm
- can be 50km wide
give characteristics of the eye wall?
- worst part of the storm [WORST weather conditions]
- storm clouds
- torrential rain
name of tropical storm case study?
what year?
Typhoon Haiyan = Phillapenes, Tacloban
2013
primary affects of typhoon Haiyan:
- 8000 deaths
- 1 million homes destroyes
- 1.9 million homeless
- 30,000 fishing boats destroyed
secondary affects of typhoon Haiyan:
- 5.6 million worker lost jobs = crops destroyed etc
- landslides = blocked roads
- lack of clean water = outbreak in water bourne diseases
immediate responses to typoon Haiyan:
- 12000 emergency shelters
- Phillapenes broadcatsers warned country before storm = 800 000 evacues
but some died as evacuation centres flooded - fishermen warned not to go to sea
- toilets dug for 100 000 people to prevent spread of diseases
give long term responses of typhoon Haiyan:
- Un = gained £300 million to help fund rebuilding & relief
- charities built new storm resistant houses
- Philippines TOURISM BOARD encouaraged ppl to come visit the county = money help to rebuild
what island in the Phillapines was most affected?
Tacloban - 90% of it was destroyed
how is climate change affecting tropical storms magnitude/frequency?
why?
become more frequent & have a higher magnitude
- due to the warmer sea temps [ increasing by 0.5 degrees / year] & it staying warmer for longer
how is climate change affecting the distrinution of tropical storms?
- tropical storms will occur at higher and lower lattitudes = more of sea abv 26 degrees
monitoring tropical storms:
- satelittes
- GLOBAL HAWK DRONES = track storms
predection:
- track forecast cone
- supercomputers = give 5 day warning
protection:
- cyclone shelters [ shelters built on stits]
-Bangladesh = have 2000 - storm drains in urban areas [HIC]
- sea walls
planning:
- training emergency services
-avoid buliding in high risk areas - evacuation routes
- warnings
