Rainforests - Amazon case study Flashcards
give 2 facts abt the size of the rainforest?
- largest on the Earth
- 8 million km squared
by 2030 what % of the amazon is predicted to be deforested?
30%
give 6 reasons for the amazon being cut down:
- commercial logging
- subistence farming
- commercial farming
- mineral extraction
- energy development
- road building
what is commercial farming?
- forest cut down for cattle grazing or big plantations
- e.g there 200 million cattle = need more space
- also need more space for rice production etc
whats subsistence farming?
- small scale farmers = forest = to grow food for themsleves & their famlies
whats commercial logging?
- amazon cut down = for valuable hardwood
whats mineral extraction?
forest cleared to enable them to mine for valuable minerals e.g gold = to boost countries development
whats energy development?
building hydroelectric dams flood the forest [can generate energy]
e.g BALBINA DAM
whats road building?
cleared forest to build 4000km TRANS-AMAZONIAN-HIGHWAY
& more roads
name the 3 impacts of deforestation:
- climate change inc
- soil erosion
- economic
explain the climate change impact
- trees reomove CO2 from the atmosphere
- Amazon stores 140 billion tonnes of carbon
- up to 75% of Brazils CO2 emissions come from deforestation
explain the impact on soil erosion
- leeching = floods wash minerals out of soil = less inteception from trees
- may cause farmers to find new areas = more deforestation
expalin the impacts on econmically
- farming especially & hardwood from logging
= bought wealth - mining industry = jop opps
How is Brazil reducing deforestation?
- Paris Agreement - brazil agreed to reduce there emissions by 37% by 2025
- global awareness = reduced demand for products from deforeted areas
- WWF funds = protect over 44% of Rainforest
- Brazil goverment use satelitte imagery to prevent illegal large scale logging
