tropical rainforest - sustainable management Flashcards
1
Q
name the 7 ways tropical rainforests can be sustainably managed:
A
- selective logging
- replanting
- eco tourism
- education
-conservation - reducing debt
- international hardwood agreements
2
Q
what is selective logging/helicopter logging:
A
- only taking a few of the older/fallen trees [less damaging, allows forest to regernerate]
- Malaysia = uses helicopters to remove trees instead of huge trucks
3
Q
explain replanting:
A
- new trees planted to replace those cut down = mainitain habitats & biodiversity
- this is the law in many countries
4
Q
explain ecotourism:
give an e.g
A
- only a small number of tourists can vistit = reduces env impacts e.g waste
- job opps = income so wont need to cut down trees & if encomy relies on ecotourism = incentive to concerve enviroment
- Costa rica = good = 21% of country is now protected from development
5
Q
explain how education helps:
A
global awareness - encouarges ppl to buy products from sustainable sources & not from deforested areas
6
Q
explain how conservation helps/e.g:
- disadvantage of this?
A
negative : only capable to do if the countries has the funds to protect the enviroment
- e.g WWF has protected 44% of Amazon rainforest form deforeastation etc
7
Q
reducing debt benefits:
A
- poorer countries will defroest [log, farm , mine] to pay back debt
- reducing it = countries can stop doing this and conserve rainorests instead
[although this conservation is not gaurantted]
8
Q
explain benefits of international hardwood agreements:
A
- prevent illegal logging for valuable hard wood
- promotes use of hardwoon form sustainablity managed forests = FTC logo
[forest stewardship council]
9
Q
what is a conservation swap:
[better method than reducing debt]
A
part of countries debt is paid in exchange for a guarantee the money will be spent on conservation
