Trophic Levels Flashcards
Trophic Level
A group of organisms that occupy the same position in a food chain. There are two basic types; Atrophic Level or Heterotrophic Level
Atrophic Level
the producer (such as plants) which can directly use solar energy
Heterotrophic Level
The consumers who obtain energy either directly for indirectly from the plants
There are three different types of consumers:
- Primary Consumers
- Secondary Consumers
- Scavengers and Decomposers
Primary Consumers
Folivores - emphasize leaves
Herbivores - emphasize grass and herbs
Frugivores - emphasize fruits
Secondary Consumers
Faunivores/Carnivores - emphasize animal tissue
Insectivores - emphasize insects
Omnivores - eat a mix of foods; moving trophic levels
Scavengers and Decomposers
eat dead organisms - no primates here!
Primate Trophic Levels
- Primates need to have digestible adaptations to be able to be a primary consumer
- Some primates, like omnivores, use many trophic levels
ex: chimpanzees: primary while eating fruit but secondary while eating red colobus monkeys
Fig Trees
Going back millions of years, fig trees sustain more species of birds and mammals than any other tree
-Figs provide food for at least 1,274 species of birds and mammals- far more than any other types of fruit
