Parasite Ecology Flashcards
Parasite ecology
Understanding patterns of infection
Ectoparasites
A parasite that lives on or in the skin but not within the body
Ring-tailed lemurs
They have tooth combs to cut back on possible ectoparasites (mites), in general females have less parasites, hair loss occurs more in males
Reason for males having more parasites is that females are groomed more than males-have social network staying in grp, they look at different areas for foraging and moving, males have to move out of the social group
Parasitic infections
-Botfly infestations (howler monkey) major cause of death on Barro Colorado Panama w/ 60% individuals infected
Endoparasitic infestations
-Tapeworms (gelada baboons) appears chronic, creates lrg cysts -> shortens life of afflicted individuals and affects offspring survival-reduced survival rate in maternal parasitic cyst infestations
