Guest Speakers Flashcards
Julie Thomas, MSc
“Piecing Together the Past: reconstructing primate life histories w/ skeletal evidence”
studied biological profiles; worked in Mongolia w/ modern/traditional herders-meat eaters the effects of rickets and Type II diabetes on their modernizing culture; Yukon Canada w/hunter/gatherers effects of TB from processing animals; Spain where earliest human settlements in Europe =grave robbery- recovered Saint grave of woman warrior; Empty Quarter in Middle East-lots of sites found via satellite, dairy herders-camels w/falconers-live feast to famine but modernized to feasting, Emerites go from poor to afleunt=obesity/type II diabetes; Ring-tailed lemurs adapted to unpredictable environ. -opportunistic omnivores, decline from habitat destruction/draught impacts health -epigenetics - lemurs strictest estrus only when certain flowers available-lemurs in captivity more on feasting like diet forming arthritis shortened life spans - individual’s physical condition influence life history events = preliminary conclusions: environ. factors do influence growth/development and ability to adapt to rapidly changing environ. conditions
Kathleen “Katie” McGuire
“Lessons from a Juvenile Primatologist”
studying misconception of old lemurs disengaging from social environ.; studied lemurs at Duke Lemur Center; field work continuous focal animal sampling recording individual behavior, had to adjust methods for conundrums of captivity w/tours of kids/adults and friendly lemurs, additional methods to record observations; findings: old individuals still socially engaged remembering food sources, helping with young, leading group during travel
