Primate Ranging and Reproduction Behavio Flashcards
Home Range
Area covered by a species in pursuit of its routine activities over the course of a year
Core area
Part of a groups home range used more frequently. Contains major resources e.g. sleeping trees, water, food
Territory
All of the group’s home range is actively defended, social group has exclusive use of the range. A core area is not territory
Ranging affected by…
Habitat and feeding ecology
Day ranges for primates living in different biomes
Forests don’t need as much space to find food resources
Savannas need more space to find food resources
Ranging and Reproduction: Chimps
Sometimes chimp males go on patrol looking for other chimps to fight and to protect territory, females stay in the center with babies unless looking for mates
If females are looking for mates they wander in a larger range to mate with as many mates as possible
