Trigeminal nerve (dave's notes) Flashcards
What does the trigeminal nerve (V) supply to the face?
Sensory and proprioceptive supply to the face
Describe the general distribution of the branches of the trigeminal nerve.
Three branches supply skin with the zones meeting at the corner of the eyes and mouth. These are sensory and proprioceptive. Each branch has 5,3,3, branches
Name the branches of the trigeminal branches, and give the umber of twigs each branch has
Ophthalmic 5
Maxillary 3
Mandibular 3
List the branches of the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve
Lacrimal Supraorbital Supratrochlear Infratrochlear External nasal nerve
List the branches of the maxillary branch of the trigeminal nerve
Infraorbital
Zygomaticofacial nerve
Zygomaticotemporal nerve
List the branches of the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve
Auriculotemporal
Buccal
Mental
What area does the lacrimal nerve supply?
A small area of skin over the lateral part of the upper lid
What does the supraorbital nerve supply and how does it reach this area?
The supraorbital nerve passes up through a notch/foramen to supply the forehead and scalp
What is the course and destination of the supratrochlear nerve?
The supratrochlear nerve passes up on the medial side through the frontal notch and supplies the middle of the forehead
What branches supply the upper lid conjunctiva?
Lacrimal
Supraorbital
Supratrochlear
Infratrochlear
What does the infratrochlear nerve supply?
The skin on the medial part of the upper lid and the bridge of the nose
What does the external nasal nerve supply?
The middle external nose down to the lip, ciliary branches supply the cornea
Via what foramen does the infraorbital nerve exit? What does it divide into?
Exits via the infraorbital foramen.
Divides into palpebral, labial and nasal branches
Where does the zygomaticofacial nerve exit? What does it supply?
The zygomaticofacial nerve exits via a foramen on the zygomatic bone and supplies the overlying skin
Where does the zygomaticotemporal nerve exit and what does it supply?
Via the temporal fossa through a foramen in the temporal surface of the zygomatic bone. It supplies the hairless part of the temple.
