What does the auditory tube connect?
The nasopharynx to the middle ear with air cavities in the mastoid part of the temporal bone
How long is the auditory tube? At what angle does it travel
Approximately 3cm long, sloping forwards/medial at 45’ and downwards at 30’
Where is the ostium of the auditory tube?
Attached to the back of the medial pterygoid plate
What is attached to the lower part of the auditory tube?
The pharyngobasilar fascia
What is the venous drainage of the auditory tube?
The mastoid emissary vein, the posterior auricular vein and the sigmoid sinus
What can infection of the auditory tube involve?
The veins in the posterior cranial fossa leading to sigmoid sinus thromboses et al
What is the nerve supply to the auditory tube?
The tympanic plexus
