The pituitary gland, other nearby structures, and the trigeminal ganglion (dave's notes) Flashcards
Where is the pituitary gland found? What is above and below the gland?
In the sella turcica, with the diaphragmatic sell above, and the inter cavernous sinuses below.
What is found lateral to the pituitary?
A dural flange separating it from the upper part of the cavernous sinus
Where is the optic chiasma found relative to the pituitary?
Above and towards the back
What angle does the pituitary stalk follow?
Passes forwards and downwards
structure
embryology physiology notes
Discuss the course of the internal carotid artery after leaving the cavernous sinus
After leaving the cavernous sinus, the internal carotid artery arches upwards lateral to the chiasma before dividing.
Describe the course of the opthalmic artery relative to the cavernous sinus and other nearby structures
The opthalmic artery branches from the internal carotid artery immediately above the cavernous sinus roof, with arteries below and lateral , nerve from above and medial??
Where is the trigeminal ganglion found?
The posterior part lies beneath the dura in the floor of the middle cranial fossa. The mouth faces backwards to the posterior cranial fossa.
What are the branches of the trigeminal ganglion?
Mandibular, maxillary, opthalmic
How does the mandibular branch of the trigeminal ganglion leave the cranium?
Passes laterally to the foramen ovale
How does the maxillary branch of the trigeminal ganglion leave the cranium?
Passes forward to the foramen rotundum
How does the opthalmic branch of the trigeminal ganglion leave the cranium?
Passes forward to the superior orbital fissure
