Where is the internal ear found? What does it consist of?
Buried in the petrous bone, consisting of the osseous labyrinth containing the membranous labyrinth filled with endolymph.
What fills the space between the osseous and membranous labyrinth?
Perilymph
Name the parts of the osseous labyrinth from front to back
Cochlear canal
Vestibule
Semicircular canals
What two labyrinths make up the inner ear?
The osseous and membranous labyrinths
Name the parts of the membranous labyrinths
Cochlear duct (within the canal, concerned with hearing) Utricle and saccule (within the vestibule; concerned with static balance) Semicircular ducts (within the semicircular canal, concerned with kinetic balance)
What is the nerve supply to the internal ear?
CN VIII Vestibulocochlear
How does the cochlear nerve enter the inner ear?
Enters the front of the inferior part of the lamina cribrosa
What supplies the macula of the saccule and ampulla of the semicircular duct?
The lower division of the vestibular nerve
What does the upper division of the vestibular nerve supply?
The macula of the utricle and the ampullae of the anterior and lateral semicircular folds
