List the branches of the facial nerve
Temporal Zygomatic Buccal Mandibular Cervical
How does the facial nerve exit the skull?
Exits from the base of the skull through the stylomastoid faormen (near the posterior belly of digastric)
What is the first branch of the facial nerve? What is the course and destination of this branch?
The posterior auricular nerve which passes upwards near the ear to occipitofrontalis
Where does the muscular branch of the facial nerve divide? To supply what?
Divids to supply the posterior belly of digastric and stylohyoid, then approaches the parotid gland
What occurs to the facial nerve just prior to entering the parotid gland?
It divides into temporozygomatic and lower craniofacial nerves
What occurs to the facial nerve within the parotid gland?
Within the gland the temporozygomatic and craniofacial nerves divide and reunite (pea anserinus).
What is deep to the nerve in the gland?
The veins and the external carotid artery
Where to the temporal branches emerge? what is their course thereafter?
The temporal branches emerge from the upper border of the parotid, and cross the zygomatic arch up to frontalis
What does paralysis of the zygomatic branches result in?
Paralysis prevents blinking
What do the zygomatic branches supply?
Upper parts to frontalis, upper orbicularis oculi and lower parts to the lower orbicularis oculi and muscles below the orbit
What do the buccal branches supply?
Buccinator and the muscles fibres of the upper lip?
Where does the marginal mandibular nerve emerge? What does it supply?
Emerges from the lower border of the gland and supplies the muscles of the lower lip
What nerve is at risk when making incisions along the lower border of the jaw?
The marginal mandibular
What is the course and destination of the cervical branch?
The cervical branch passes vertically downwards supplying platysma
