Parotid region (dave's notes) Flashcards
What muscle is found in the parotid region?
Masseter
What is the origin and insertion of the superficial part of masseter?
Superficial part arises from the anterior 2/3rds of the lower border of the zygomatic arch
Fibres slope down at 45’ and insert into a wide area from the mandible angle upwards and forwards. Fibres fuse anteriorly but are separated posteriorly
What is the origin of the intermediate part of masseter?
Arises from the middle 1/3rd of the zygomatic arch
What is the origin and insertion of the deep part of masseter?
From the deep surface of the arch. Fibres pass vertically downwards into the ramus of the mandible
What is the upper part of masseter covered in? How does this differ from the lower half?
Upper part is covered in aponeurotic fibres (to aid with gliding). The lower half is fleshy.
What is the nerve supply to masseter? Where is it found?
Masseteric nerve runs down between the deep and intermediate parts
What is the blood supply to masseter? What is its course?
A branch of the superficial temporal or transverse artery runs forward between the superficial and intermediate parts. Intersecting artery.
What is the nerve supply to masseter?
The masseteric branch fro the anterior division of the mandibular nerve.
What is the action of masseter?
Action is to close the jaw by elevating and drawing forwards the angle of the mandible.
