An acute stress response following a traumatic event that lasts between 3 days and 1 month. Symptoms are similar to those of PTSD and also include hypervigilance, irritability, aggression, sleep disturbance, and difficulty concentrating.
acute stress disorder
Traumatic event that occurs during childhood, including any type of abuse or neglect; exposure during childhood to violence, substance misuse, or mental illness in the home; parental divorce or separation; and/or having a family member who is incarcerated.
adverse childhood experience
Exerting control over another’s access to money and financial resources in an attempt to reduce individual autonomy and thereby control the other person.
financial abuse
The experience of physical or emotional harm or damage. may occur by intention or accident.
injury
The physical, sexual, or psychological harm of a current or former intimate partner by another; includes physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Also called interpersonal violence.
intimate partner violence
The sexual assault or repeated sexual harassment of a member of the United States military.
military sexual trauma
A disorder consisting of a group of characteristic symptoms that occur following exposure to traumatic events, either experienced directly or through witnessing trauma to others.
posttraumatic stress disorder (ptsd)
Symptoms of PTSD that result from hearing about or witnessing the trauma of another.
secondary trauma
Any unwanted sexual contact, ranging from unwanted kissing or touching to rape.
sexual violence
An individual’s unique response to experiencing a physically or emotionally harmful or life-threatening event or to witnessing a harmful or life-threatening event.
trauma
Care that accommodates vulnerabilities of trauma survivors, avoids retraumatization and exacerbation of symptoms for those who have been traumatized, and facilitates patient participation in treatment.
