disorders of childhood and adolescence Flashcards
A concept of child development that describes the desire to be near to the people we are attached to (e.g., a baby’s desire to be near its mother); to seek comfort and safety from them; and to use those to whom we are attached as a secure base from which to explore the world.
attachment
The most common psychiatric disorder of childhood and adolescence, characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
The ability of the brain to change structurally and functionally as a result of input from the environment.
brain plasticity/neuroplasticity
Physical assault or violence, mental abuse (including intimidation and verbal threats), or sexual abuse perpetrated against a child or adolescent.
child abuse
A relatively persistent pattern of multiple antisocial behaviors during childhood and adolescence, including fighting, bullying, stealing, vandalism, and lying for personal gain.
conduct disorder (cd)
Disorder characterized by recurrent, frequent outbursts inconsistent with a child’s developmental level and occurring for a year or more; may be diagnosed only if other disorders (e.g., PTSD) do not better explain the symptoms and presentation.
disruptive mood dysregulation disorder
Failure to provide for the basic needs of a child, adolescent, or other dependent person.
neglect
A pediatric disorder characterized by symptoms of irritability and defiance of adult authorities, as well as anger and aggression that disrupt daily functioning.
oppositional defiant disorder (odd)
Positive changes that result from the process of overcoming trauma.
posttraumatic growth
The capacity to adapt successfully to adversity.
resilience
A rare childhood disorder in which children fully capable of speech in some settings fail to speak in selected social situations.
