Theory that the only real “truth” is found in observable, scientific facts and which rejects the transcendent and religion as sources of truth.
positivism
Era of ideas and beliefs that began in the early 20th century and is characterized by many ideas, including an affirmation of diverse perspectives and a rejection of the idea of absolute truth or broad explanations about the nature of reality, such as those contained in both science and religion.
postmodernism
Being with and attending to the patient in a way that promotes a level of human engagement and interchange between the nurse and patient that is meaningful to the patient; may also be described as a condition in which all the nurse’s attention and energy are focused in the moment on the purpose of that moment.
presence
A formalized and often structured way of answering questions about the nature of life. This formalization may include structured ways of worship or spiritual practices, such as specific prayers said for specific purposes; sacred texts that outline instructions for daily living; and/or a hierarchy of leadership.
religion
An inherent quality of all humans to search for transcendence, connectedness, and meaning of and purpose in life.
spirituality
Referring to the belief that something (e.g., nature) or someone (e.g., a supreme being) that goes beyond the physical and material and beyond that which can be understood by human knowledge.
transcendent
The cognitive map or view of the world that is developed in childhood and adolescence, which includes all the learning that shapes one’s beliefs and feelings about the world.
