Phenomenon that occurs when the nurse attributes feelings regarding someone within the nurse’s life to the patient and responds unconsciously based on these feelings.
countertransference
A form of cognitive-behavioral therapy introduced by Marsha Linehan that employs a unique blend of psychotherapy and skills training; instead of the change focus of cognitive-behavioral therapy, it stresses a balance of acceptance and change that is derived from the mindfulness and judgment avoidance of Zen meditation.
dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
Emotional responses that fall outside the realm of accepted responses or are out of control.
emotional dysregulation
Ability to regulate or control emotions and the expression of emotions.
emotional regulation
Changeable, unregulated; typically used to refer to a mood state.
labile
Excessive interest in or preoccupation with the self, which is often illustrated in manipulative or demanding behaviors and a lack of empathy for others.
narcissism
A distinctive set of traits, behavior styles, and patterns that make up one’s character.
personality
A persistent, maladaptive pattern of thinking, coping, and relating to others.
personality disorder
The transfer of blame to another person to avoid the feelings that would be experienced by blaming oneself.
projection
Experiencing the emotions of another.
projective identification
A method of questioning another’s perceptions without arguing.
reasonable doubt
Any behavior whose intent is to cause harm to the self without the intention to end life. Examples include cutting, abrading, hair pulling, biting, burning, and scratching.
self-injurious behavior
A behavior in which the individual divides and plays one person or group against another.
splitting
Phenomenon that occurs when the patient attributes feelings to the therapist regarding another person in the patient’s life.
transference
Objects, such as blankets or stuffed animals, that patients can carry from setting to setting to help maintain a sense of security and comfort.
