Transport Flashcards
What is adrenaline
Adrenaline is a hormone which stimulates a faster heart rate to prepaid for ‘fight or flight’
Hat is the phloem
The phloem is a tube in the plant, formed from living cells, which carries dissolved substances from the leaves, up and down
What does the immune system do
The immune system protects the body against infection with white blood cells
What is Haemoglobin
Haemoglobin is the red chemical in red blood cells which reversely combines with the oxygen
What is the atria
The atria are the two atrium
The atrium are the two chambers of the heart that receive blood from veins
What is evaporation
evaporation is when particles of liquid gain enough energy to move fast enough to become gas
What is heart rate
Heart rate is the number of heart beats per given time
What is humidity
Humidity is the concentration of water molecules in the air
What is plasma
Plasma is the liquid which carries dissolved food molecules, urea, hormones, carbon dioxide and other substances round the body
How is the shape of a red blood cell described
Biconcave
The centre is pressed inwards, making the cell thinner in the middle
What are Lymphocytes
Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that makes antibodies to attack pathogens
What are Phagocytes
Phagocytes are a type of white blood cell which engulf and destroy pathogens
What is the Xylem
The Xylem are tubes formed from dead cells in plants which carry water up from the roots
What are the Valves
The valves are the flaps in the heart, and the veins which prevent blood flowing the wrong way
What are Platelets
What do they do
Platelets are fragments which cause blood clots at sites of damage in the blood vessels
